Mikey Garcia predicts Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford

Mikey Garcia, the former four-division champion, has given his thoughts on a potential clash between Alvarez and Crawford.

Speaking on Crawford, Garcia praised the current interim world super welterweight champion. “Crawford is one of the best fighters that I’ve ever seen,” the former title holder told Fight Hub TV.

Garcia said that he spoke to Crawford in December, and gave him the praise he felt he deserved. “I told him, ‘Dude, you’re a badass. You’ve been a badass. You don’t always get the recognition because of politics in boxing and favoritism here.’ But he truly does have the skills. He’s a great fighter and he’s proven it multiple times, obviously.”

However, despite being full of praise for Crawford, he feels as if the size difference will be the decisive factor against Alvarez.

“Canelo ain’t gonna come down to 160. Maybe 166, maximum, if he accepts. I think Canelo wins that fight based on just the size – the power and size. Now, skills-wise, I think Crawford is a better-skilled fighter. But the difference in size will be the deciding factor, and that’s why I’m not even a fan of that fight.”

Crawford made his super welterweight debut in his last outing, weighing in at 154 lbs. However, Alvarez is the current super middleweight champion and has previously competed at 174.5 lbs.

Mikey Garcia names alternative options for Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford

As he is not a fan of a fight between Alvarez and Crawford, Garcia has named other options he would rather see the fighters pursue.

In terms of Crawford, he feels there are plenty of challenges for the American in the super welterweight division.

As for Alvarez, Garcia thinks that the Mexican should challenge himself again by moving up a weight class. “I’d rather see Canelo move up and fight somebody like [Artur] Beterbiev or [Dmitry] Bivol again.”

“If he wanted to challenge himself, then he should move up to 175 and challenge himself against those guys – not a smaller guy moving up.”

Alvarez’s last venture to light heavyweight would see him lose out to Bivol via unanimous decision. However, it is a rematch Garcia is in favor of.
