Canelo Alvarez makes one request in order to make Terence Crawford fight happen

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez isn’t completely ruling out the possibility of facing Terence Crawford.

Terence Crawford has wanted Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez ever since his impressive win against Errol Spence Jr in 2023.

Canelo is currently training for his upcoming fight against Edgar Berlanga at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 14, 2024.

This of course means that the four-weight world champion won’t be available any time soon whilst Crawford recently vacated his WBO welterweight belt, weeks after beating Israil Madrimov at the start of August.

After talks broke down between the two it now appears Vergil Ortiz Jr could be in the front line to become Crawford’s latest challenge among a list of several others who could be in contention.

Canelo Alvarez makes one request to Terence Crawford

Canelo is currently preparing for his fight against Berlanga but the Mexican hasn’t completely shut down any hopes of a face-off with Crawford in the future – providing he faces Teofimo Lopez first.

He told Fight Hub TV: “Yesterday they text me asking to discuss the fight with Crawford and I said ‘look I’m not going to talk about any other fight, I’m focused 100% on this fight [against Berlanga]’.

“I don’t like the way he talk and I’m in a position that if he wants to work with me it’s my way not their way. I don’t need it. It’s not the way to approach me. I respect everybody and I respect Turki but if he wants to work with me it needs to be my way.

“Crawford needs to fight Teofimo [Lopez] first and then we’ll see… Teofimo deserves it more than me.”

Canelo’s issues with Turki Alalshikh

Any fight between Canelo and Crawford will heavily weigh on whether he and Turki Alalshikh can settle their differences.

Talks between the two had taken place however, earlier this month (August 2024), the man prepared to offer the money required to make it happen, ruled out any hope of it taking place – just 48 hours after making the offer.

Ever since Alalshikh retracted his offer, the two have gone back and forth, exchanging verbals, and Eddie Hearn admits that he can understand the frustrations from both parties.

“It’s difficult because, obviously, I’m very fond of both,” the Matchroom promoter told his YouTube channel. “I think, firstly, His Excellency has one thing on his mind: make the biggest fights that can be made in boxing. And I think he probably shares a lot of the frustration of boxing fans over the last few years.

“I think what he’s bringing to the sport is extremely refreshing because he has no interest in poor fights. He has no interest in tick-over fights or warm-up fights. He just wants to make the biggest fights that can be made.

“In His Excellency’s mind, the fights that he wants to see are Canelo Alvarez against Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez against David Benavidez. I think every boxing fan in the world would share that passion and that idea that His Excellency has to make those fights.”
