Set for one of the biggest outings of his professional career, Canelo Alvarez may come unstuck against Terence Crawford due to a rather overlooked part of his approach.
Meeting with the undefeated Crawford next month in a blockbuster, Canelo will put his undisputed super middleweight crown on the line against the so-far perfect Nebraska puncher.
And despite being the naturally bigger fighter when compared with the moving Crawford, Canelo — who has landed light heavyweight gold in the past — has his work cut out, according to many in the boxing sphere.
But notably, one of the more vocal voices in the community claims Canelo’s own game plan and usual approach may land him in trouble against the technical Crawford.

Canelo Alvarez warned about game plan for Terence Crawford fight
Riding a rather one-sided win over William Scull into his return against the unbeaten Crawford, Canelo has taken out the who’s who of the super middleweight limit since his 2022 loss to Dmitry Bivol in his most recent light heavyweight title pursuit.

But according to veteran analyst Stephen A. Smith — who is picking Crawford to win, Canelo’s own approach leaves him open to a comfortable loss against the Omaha star.
“(Terence) Crawford will beat Canelo (Alvarez) by decision. I can’t see anybody knocking out Canelo Alvarez,” Smith said on the All The Smoke podcast.
“But, I do believe that if you can box and you can move, you can beat Canelo. You can outpoint him.
“One of the things I don’t like about Canelo, despite his greatness. It’s like almost every shot has to be a power shot, and that’s not beating Crawford,” Smith explained.
But for all of Smith’s confidence, Crawford himself is less than certain he can get the job done and defeat Canelo — in a rather honest preview of their clash.
Terence Crawford weighs up chances of beating Canelo Alvarez
Fresh from his summer victory over Israil Madrimov last year, Crawford remained open regarding his chances of defeating the sizeable Canelo next month.
Speaking with The Ring ahead of the clash, Crawford admitted he was confident of success against the Jalisco megastar — but in the same breath, not overly confident of getting past the super middleweight star.
“We’re never 100%, I’mma say 70%. I’m always high on confidence,” Crawford said. “If you don’t have confidence in yourself, then why should anybody else believe in you?”
