Canelo Alvarez has entertained an ‘absolutely huge’ showdown with a former world title challenger

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is still weighing up his options, with boxing fans hoping for his next fight to at least have some jeopardy attached to it.

The pound-for-pound star comes off a comprehensive victory over Edgar Berlanga, flooring his brave but limited opponent before securing a unanimous decision to defend his super middleweight crown.

Before that, Canelo Alvarez amassed dominant performances in four of his world title defenses, widely outpointing the likes of Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia.

And so, it could be said that the 34-year-old has not been properly tested since his devastating defeat to Dmitry Bivol back in 2022.

Ben Shalom reveals talks have commenced for a potential clash between Canelo Alverez and Chris Eubank Jr

Chris Eubank Jr was widely mooted as a possible opponent for Canelo earlier this year, but ultimately missed the boat on what would be his career-defining dustup.

The 35-year-old comes off a seventh-round stoppage over Kamil Szeremeta, which followed a more impressive display against domestic rival and former world champion Liam Smith.

But despite his run of form, the Brit has fallen short in his previous three world-level assignments, with Smith, George Groves and Billy Joe Saunders all boasting wins over him.

Still, Boxxer promoter Ben Shalom has confirmed that an early spell of negotiations for his potential collision with Canelo has now reignited.

“For me the two fights for me are Canelo and Conor Benn. We’ve already started small conversations around the Canelo fight,” Shalom told Sky Sports.

“Obviously that [Canelo fight] was close last time. I believe that’s a fight that interests Canelo. You can imagine the press conference in the UK and the US, it would be absolutely huge.

“I think Canelo needs dance partners but he also needs stars. I don’t think his last couple of opponents have been the biggest stars and Chris Eubank Jr’s certainly a big star.

“If he’s ever going to fight in the UK, that’s the fight and that would sell out Wembley Stadium.”

Will Chris Eubank Jr face Canelo Alvarez instead of Conor Benn?

Eubank Jr engaged in an intense stare down with unbeaten Brit Conor Benn following his last outing, with football sensation Neymar acting as peacekeeper.

The pair were set to lock horns in 2022 before Benn tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance, leading to his British boxing license being suspended.

Yet still, the 28-year-old has been clamoring for his fight with Eubank Jr to be rescheduled, claiming innocence of any wrongdoing.

And yet, while Benn’s license remains a fierce point of discussion, it would seem that Eubank Jr has, instead, chosen to set his sights on a legacy dustup with Canelo.
