Canelo Alvarez finally meets up with boxing’s ‘most powerful man’ after over a year of resistance

The current super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez has yet to have his next opponent confirmed ahead of his 2025 return.

Alvarez last fought in September of 2024, defeating Edgar Berlanga via unanimous decision.

The Mexican is the current holder of both the WBC and WBO World Super Middleweight titles, however, it is unclear whether chasing undisputed glory is a priority for the fighter.

Despite it being understood that Canelo is in talks for a super middleweight unification bout, another bout may be on the horizon for the fighter.

Canelo Alvarez meets with Turki Alalshikh despite previous tensions

Ahead of the Ring Magazine awards on Saturday night, Alvarez was pictured with Saudi Arabian advisor Turki Alalshikh.

Although the contents of their conversation are unconfirmed, Alalshikh has not been shy about sharing his thoughts regarding Alvarez’s next opponent.

On several occasions, the Saudi Arabian has broadcasted his desire to make a fight between Alvarez and Terence Crawford. The bout was also included in Alalshikh’s fight wish list.

However, the Mexican has disregarded the potential super fight on occasion.

Tensions began to rise in August of 2024 when Alalshikh brought up the potential fight ahead of Alvarez competing on Mexican Independence Day. Focused on his then-scheduled fight, Canelo disregarded interest and was not complimentary of the Saudi Arabian’s fight-making methods.

Tweeting in August 2024, Alalshikh said in response, “I heard what Canelo said that he respects me but doesn’t like the way we do business. As for him respecting me, it doesn’t matter to me if he does or not. As for the way I do business, I know why he doesn’t like it, because I only target big fights at fair prices, so of course anyone who likes easy fights won’t like that.”

However, it appears the two have started 2025 by burying the hatchet as the two enjoyed a meeting with one another in London.

Canelo Alvarez comments on potential Terence Crawford bout

Speaking at the Ring Magazine awards on Saturday night, the super middleweight champion Alvarez was asked about a potential mega-fight with Crawford.

In a red-carpet interview with Sky Sports, Alvarez said “We’ll see what happens” and “Anything is possible” when asked about a potential Crawford fight.

“If the people want to see that fight, we’ll see.”

One potential stumbling block for making the bout may be an agreement on weight. Crawford last competed at super welterweight but has mostly fought at welterweight.

Meanwhile, Alvarez currently fights at super middleweight, two weight classes above super welterweight.

It is currently unclear as to whether their bout would be contested at a catchweight, or if Crawford would make the move up the divisions.
