‘Absolutely eggstortionate’… Boxing fans react to Chris Eubank Jr being hit with massive fine for Conor Benn prank

There are a lot of interesting narratives heading into one of the most anticipated grudge matches in recent times.

For Chris Eubank Jr, beating Conor Benn would give him a big boost of momentum at 35-years-old that could lead to career-defining fights.

Whilst Benn isn’t concerned about the size advantage for his opponent, he has a lot of questions to answer after their initial meeting was cancelled due to a positive drug test.

However, the main talking point from the recent press conferences between the two rivals instead revolved around a common supermarket item.

Eubank Jr slapped Benn across the face with an egg in their first face-off which led to the following press conference being cancelled entirely.

Chris Eubank Jr gets fined £100,000 over egg-related incident

Promoters are often cautious of letting two heated opponents stand face-to-face with one another because of the penalties that can occur when tensions boil over.

In this instance, Chris Eubank Jr’s slap only resulted in a press conference being cancelled rather than causing a threat to the fight itself but he has still received significant punishment.

Sky Sports reported that Eubank Jr was fined £100,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for his violent conduct at the face-off.

Whilst it likely would have landed the promoters in hot water also, the fine might have been worth it for the additional interest and buzz that this moment created around the fight.

As the saying goes, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.

Fans reacted to the fine via social media, offering up their own egg-related puns in response.

“£100k is no yolk,” wrote one fan on X with another stating that the fine is, “Absolutely eggstortionate”.

With the slap being in reference to Conor Benn’s positive drug test with his egg consumption being one of the explanations for the result, other fans pointed out the stark difference in punishments.

“Fail multiple drug tests? No charge. Hit someone with an egg? £100k. Very few sports do nonsense quite like boxing.”

‘Worth every penny’… Chris Eubank Jr reacts to fine

Chris Eubank Jr made his thoughts on his recent fine very clear via an Instagram post in response to the news.

Having posted images of the eggs being placed in his jacket to show how he masterminded this plan, he definitely knew that there would be a penalty waiting for him on the other side of the press conference.

This doesn’t seem to have bothered Eubank Jr in the slightest as he wrote, “Worth every penny”.

One thing that is for certain is that the pre-fight mind games between both men certainly won’t end there as fans count down to April 26.
