59-year-old boxing legend who beat Lennox Lewis proves age is just a number with KO win

Lennox Lewis was beaten just twice in his career and is considered by many to be the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time.

Tasting defeat for the first time in 1994 to Oliver McCall, Lewis was knocked out by a shot he didn’t remember. However, the former heavyweight champion was able to get revenge on McCall three years later.

The second and final loss of Lewis’ career was also by way of stoppage, as Hasim Rahman earned a fifth-round knockout in South Africa. However, thanks to Lewis receiving advice from Nelson Mandela, he was able to deliver his own finish to Rahman in an immediate rematch.

However, despite both of Lewis’ losses coming over 20 years ago, one of his former opponents is still delivering knockouts as a true veteran.

Oliver McCall scores first-round knockout aged 59

Despite being 59 years of age, McCall made an unlikely return to the sport of boxing in 2024. Having taken a career break in 2019, ‘The Atomic Bull’ got back in the ring for the first time in 5 years.

Facing Stacy Fazier, who had a 16-22 record, the former heavyweight champion won via second round knockout.

The win would not only be a remarkable achievement, but it would also be record setting. The victory in Texas meant that McCall is now the oldest former heavyweight world champion to win a professional boxing match.

However, one win at the age of 59 was not enough for McCall. In February of 2025, the American would make it two wins in three months, as he scored a first round knockout over Gary Cobia, who lost by retirement.

It is unclear as to who McCall may face in his next bout.

Oliver McCall won world heavyweight title with vicious right hand

When McCall fought Lewis in 1994, the American fighter went into the bout as a sizeable underdog. However, after a close affair in the first round, McCall would spoil Lewis’ title defense in front of an English crowd at Wembley Arena.

As the two engaged, a sharp right hand from McCall would find the chin of Lewis, sending him crashing to the ground.

Although Lewis was able to get back to his feet, he was clearly disoriented, meaning the referee called a stop to the fight.

McCall would defend his WBC World Heavyweight title in his next bout, beating Larry Holmes. However, he would drop the belt in 1996 when he faced Frank Bruno.
