‘RDJ’ lost three of his last four before deciding to hang the gloves up at 35-years-old.
Father time waits for no man in combat sports and the game can move so quickly that today’s front page news is tomorrow’s fish and chips paper.
In any professional sport, you have a limited window to capitalize on your prime years so that when all is said and done, an athlete can look back at what they accomplished with pride.
This isn’t always the case but if you’re able to be financially successful whilst producing a few memorable nights along the way, it certainly makes the struggles seem worth it.
That’s exactly the case for a 30-fight professional and well known name in the British boxing scene who called time on his career following a tough night at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester on Saturday.

Robbie Davies Jr announces retirement on social media after being stopped by Pat McCormack
Robbie Davies Jr suffered the sixth loss of his pro career on February 15 after being stopped by Pat McCormack inside six rounds.
The undefeated Olympian put on a show to earn the biggest win of his career, dropping his opponent three times which led to the corner calling the fight off just past the halfway mark.
Davies Jr later announced on social media that it’s time for him to call it a day after struggling to find consistency in his recent bouts.
Half of his pro losses have come in his last four fights having been stopped by McCormack and Darragh Foley with a defeat via decision against Sergey Lipinets.
The 35-year-old scouser still has many career highlights to look back on having held the British, Commonwealth and European light-welterweight titles in the past along with some big all-Brit showdowns against the likes of Glenn Foot, Joe Hughes and Lewis Ritson.
“End of a era.. @PatMcCormack14 is one of the best skilled fighters I’ve had the pleasure to sharing the ring with. @MatchroomBoxing Thank you everyone. I’ve lived out my dream. 12 years Professional. Anyone, anywhere. Loved every minute of it.”
Robbie Davies Jr benefited from having a former world champion in his corner
A lot of the talk once the fight came to an end was the excellent and compassionate work of Robbie Davies Jr’s corner when stopping the fight.
Former world champion Anthony Crolla, who faced the likes of Vasiliy Lomachenko and Jorge Linares in his 45-fight career, was the chief corner.
Rather than watching Davies Jr go out on his shield and take unnecessary damage, he made the tough call to protect his fighter.
“I care too much about you. You’ve not done much wrong, just come across a very good kid whose just a little bit too sharp for you. Little bit too big, little bit too sharp. I’m gonna call it, okay?”
After Davies Jr thanked his corner in his retirement post, Crolla echoed the sentiment.
