Who is Tyson Fury? Meet the Gypsy King who is one of the great heavyweight champions

Tyson Fury is one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time with one of the most remarkable careers in the sport.

The English boxer became the Undisputed World Heavyweight champion in 2015 when Tyson Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko, but vacated the belts and went into retirement after his mental health spiraled.

However, his comeback was inspirational, dropping huge amounts of weight to become champion again in 2019 with Fury’s massive win over Deontay Wilder.

While Fury is now retired and looking at life outside boxing, he is still considered one of the all-time greats in the ring.

Tyson Fury is 36 years old, having been born on August 12, 1988. The former heavyweight boxing champion was born in Manchester, England, and is the son of two Irish travellers. He was named after Mike Tyson, a champion boxer whom Fury would emulate in the years following.

Fury stands at 6 feet and 9 inches tall, which is equivalent to 206cm. For his fight against Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024, Fury weighed in at a career-high 281 lbs. He also has a reach of 85 inches, or 216cm.

Fury has a massive following on social media, despite posting fairly irregularly. The former boxer has 6.8 million followers on his Instagram account (handle tysonfury), where he posts various posts, including cartoon versions of himself and photos alongside sports stars like Sir Alex Ferguson.

Elsewhere, the former heavyweight champion boasts 2.2 million followers on X (formerly known as Twitter), although Fury has only posted once since announcing his retirement from boxing. His handle is tyson_fury.

Fury married his wife, Paris, in 2008 when she was 18 years old. Both come from traveller families and have remained happily married in the decades since.

The couple has 7 children together, with the latest being born in 2023. All of the boys are named “Prince”, while the girls each have unique names, not following any convention.

However, he suffered two losses back-to-back against Usyk, as the judges ruled both times that Fury had lost the heavyweight encounter, the last taking place in December 2024.

Is Tyson Fury retired?

Following his second defeat to Usyk, Fury announced that he was retiring from the sport of boxing.

In a succinct social media post, the former world champion said: “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing.

“It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m going to end with this; Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side. Get up!”

This announcement disappointed fans who were hoping to see Fury battle fellow Briton Anthony Joshua in the ring before he retired from boxing.

Tyson Fury’s next fight

As he has announced his retirement, Fury has no future fights scheduled. Despite a long-rumored clash with Joshua, it does not look like Fury will be fighting again.

Tyson Fury vs Oleksander Osyk

Two defeats to Usyk ended Fury’s undefeated streak and forced him into a second boxing retirement at the end of 2024.

The first fight took place in May 2024 and was to crown the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the world, with all the major boxing associations’ belts on the line for this titanic clash.

Sadly for Fury, he lost for the first time in his career to the Ukrainian Cat in Riyadh. Despite one judge giving him the win, Usyk won the fight by split decision and became the undisputed top heavyweight in the world.

Unhappy with the decision, Fury demanded a rematch that took place in December. Things went much the same way, except this time the judges gave Usyk the win via unanimous decision and sent Fury back into retirement.

Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou

Fury was almost embarrassed in one of his last fights when he almost lost to an MMA fighter making his boxing debut.

Fury battled Francis Ngannou in an exhibition fight in Saudi Arabia in 2023, pitting the world heavyweight champion against the former UFC heavyweight champion.

It seemed like the fight would be an easy win for Fury, but he made hard work of the debuting boxer. Ngannou knocked down the Gypsy King in the 3rd round, stunning the boxing world and threatening one of the biggest upsets of all time.

Fury regained his composure and went on to win the fight via a split decision, although many people felt the former UFC star had the better of Fury throughout the bout.

Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua

One of the biggest fights the fans never got to see was an all-British affair between Fury and Joshua.

The world of boxing was always split between who was the best out of Fury or Joshua. The two world champions seemed destined to face off to determine the undisputed world champion, but the bout never materialized due to a variety of reasons.

Eddie Hearn reserved a stadium for Fury vs Joshua earlier this year, expecting the bout to finally take place. Joshua even teased retirement amid a potential fight with Fury, yet the pair never stepped into the ring together.

As of May 2025, Fury is still retired and the fight with AJ is never going to happen, which is a real shame for the sport of boxing.
