‘We need to clean up the sport’… Terence Crawford once named his issues with modern boxing

Terence Crawford is set for a huge blockbuster clash with Canelo Alvarez in September 2025. A win over the Mexican would establish ‘Bud’ as one of the modern greats.

From Crawford stopping fighters such as Dierry Jean to Errol Spence Jr., ‘Bud’ is truly one of the pound-for-pound best boxers on the planet.

Having tasted nothing but victory across the 41 fights in his career, Crawford could be on course to retire as one of boxing’s most successful champions.

However, in 2024, Crawford outlined some of the issues that he had with modern boxing.

Terence Crawford explained his problems with boxing in 2024

Appearing as a guest on the Joe Rogan Experience in 2024, the former undisputed world champion expressed the concerns he had with modern boxing.

In a discussion with Joe Rogan, Crawford expressed his opinion that some fights should be ‘mandatory’ in boxing. “You can clean up the sport of boxing so that there’s only one champion in the division, like the UFC.”

“I think we got too many titles, too many sanctioning bodies. I think we need to clean up the sport as a whole.”

Crawford also added that he would like to see boxers receiving pensions, a union, and health insurance. “I think we need all that.”

Speaking in January 2025 about the upcoming fight between Crawford and Alvarez, Rogan said, “I just hope he’s big enough,” in reference to ‘Bud.’

The Joe Rogan Experience #2266 episode would include the host saying, “Canelo hits so hard, man.”

However, Rogan also gave credit to Crawford when looking forward to the bout, “He’s so skillful, he’s so slick. He’s the best guy in the sport at switch-hitting.”

The UFC commentator would then compare Crawford to Roy Jones Jr., “It’s art. He’s piecing up people, it’s an art.”

Crawford will challenge Alvarez on September 12th, 2025 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. As the fight will be contested at super middleweight, all four belts in the weight class will be up for grabs.

The bout will see two of the few undisputed world champions in the four-belt era face one another, as Crawford looks to earn the status in a third weight class.
