Tyson Fury required 47 stitches after bloody war ahead of Deontay Wilder rematch

Tyson Fury is best known for his trilogy with Deontay Wilder, in which he got off the canvas after a huge shot from ‘The Bronze Bomber’, but it was just a few fights later that he survived something far worse.

In 2018, Tyson Fury had three fights following his three-year layoff from boxing after his win over Wladimir Klitschko.

He defeated Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta before fighting Deontay Wilder for the WBC world title. Fury was put on his back and seemed unlikely to get back up. ‘The Gypsy King’ showed his mettle and got up, finishing the fight but leaving without the title.

It was two fights after his draw with Wilder, and one fight before their rematch, that Fury was forced to overcome one of the biggest hurdles of his career.

Tyson Fury was almost stopped as horror cut turned fight into a bloodbath

In 2019, just five months before his rematch with Wilder, Fury, who dressed as Batman before defeating Klitscho, faced 20-0 Otto Wallin.

Fury, the former world champion, was always expected to win the fight but a blow from Wallin saw Fury covered in blood, with the cut turning the fight into a bloodbath.

Many believe the cut was so severe that the fight ought to have been stopped, and suggest if it were any boxer other than Fury it likely would’ve been, but ‘The Gypsy King’ survived to the final bell, and claimed a unanimous decision victory over the Swede.

Fury went on to defeat Wilder, who may move to MMA, by seventh-round stoppage in their rematch, whilst Wallin fought various low-level names before losing to Anthony Joshua and, more recently, Derek Chisora.

Tyson Fury repaid the cutman who saved him against Otto Wallin

According to Sky Sports, Jorge Capetillo, Fury’s cutman, told of how Fury did not forget how Capetillo helped him in his fight against Wallin, and repaid his debt to him when it counted.

Capetillo can perhaps be credited with saving Fury in the fight, as if it weren’t for the management of the horrific cut, which required 47 stitches after the fight, Fury may have taken his first loss.

Capetillo said: “When he knew we were locked down because of Covid-19 and my gym was closed, he texted me and said: ‘Is there anything I can do to help?'”

“He is still taking care of me. He sent me money.”

He said Fury, who punched himself in the head once, told him: “I’ll sort out some money for your family so you can be good”.
