The first man to KO Manny Pacquiao faced a police manhunt and 14-year layoff before 2011 ring return

Manny Pacquiao will return to the ring against Mario Barrios in a world title fight at the age of 46, and hopes not to take his ninth career loss.

Manny Pacquiao has eight losses now in his 72-fight career. His latest came against Yordenis Ugas, who Barrios has beaten, in his 2021 comeback attempt.

Pacquiao’s loss to Tim Bradley incited huge controversy, with many suggesting Pac-Man ought to have just seven losses.

The first of these, though, came in a bizarre fight in which Pacquiao wore thicker gloves than his opponent, who was later hunted by police on suspicion of a vicious crime.

Manny Pacquiao was KO’d by Rustico Torrecampo, who was accused of murder

In 1996, just one year into Pacquiao’s pro career, the 11-0 Filipino was matched against 11-4-5 countryman, Rustico Torrecampo.

Ahead of the fight, Pacquiao weighed in one pound over the limit, and was forced to wear eight ounce gloves whilst Torrecampo wore six ounces.

In the third round, Torrecampo appears to knock Pacquiao down with his shoulder, whilst simultaneously landing a below-the-belt blow.

Despite the fouls, Pacquiao was counted out, taking his first defeat, by stoppage.

Torrecampo fought seven times more after the Pacquiao win, winning just two of them.

After his retirement, Torrecampo ran a roadside food stall, which was struck by a driver, who engaged in an altercation with Torrecampo.

That driver was later found dead with severe wounds, and Torrecampo was nowhere to be found.

It’s unknown what happened to him in the time between the arrest warrant and his boxing return in 2011, and whether or not he was captured or served any time.

After a police manhunt and 14 years since his last outing in boxing, Torrecampo returned in 2011 with a third-round KO of a 1-3 opponent.
