Terence Crawford beat a boxing legend in the amateurs who’d go on to become a four-weight world champion

Terence Crawford outpointed a future boxing legend during a tremendous amateur display.

Throughout his career, the American has proven himself as one of the greatest fighters of the modern era.

After conquering the lightweight division, Crawford destroyed Julius Indongo to become the undisputed super lightweight champion, before then beating Errol Spence to do the same thing at welterweight.

However, while he’s achieved so much in the paid ranks, one of his greatest victories came before he turned professional.

Terence Crawford beat Mikey Garcia in the amateurs

In a clash of two boxing sensations, Terence Crawford went head-to-head with Mikey Garcia, in a bout of the highest quality.

While the Mexican-American would go on to carve out a sparkling legacy of his own, when he set foot inside the ring with ‘Bud’, he was found severely wanting.

In an interview with Fight Hype, the icon recalled: “I remember he was up three or four points in the first round right away, and after that he just ran around the whole time. It’s amateurs; the point system worked for him.

“At the end of the fight, he beat me like 19-11, something crazy, big difference. We made a mistake of following him; we fell into his game plan. It was a three or four-round fight, so he very easily outpointed me.

“My nephew fought him six months later; we decided not to follow him. My nephew did a lot better than I did. He was up until the last round, he lost by one or two points, I think, very close fight.”

Terence Crawford was hurt badly by a powerful right hand in his first world title defense

That night against Garcia, the crowd in attendance had no idea just how great the two boxers inside the ring would go on to be.

By the time Crawford had won a world title in the professional game, people were beginning to realize just how talented he is.

However, in his first defense of his crown, it was evident that the warrior wasn’t yet the finished product.

In a moment of madness, Crawford was badly hurt by a massive right hand.
