Teofimo Lopez was given his first professional loss by massive underdog in ‘Fight of the Year’ brawl

Teofimo Lopez is one of the brightest stars in the super lightweight division, as he holds the WBO world title.

The top finisher from New York has been the world champion in both the light and super lightweight divisions, making himself a recognizable name in the sport.

As of March 2025, his record stands at 21-1, with 13 wins coming by stoppage.

In what was perhaps his greatest win, Lopez had a convincing win over Vasyl Lomachenko, when the two met in a lightweight unification bout in 2020.

However, as Lopez looked to defend his titles in the following fight, things did not go his way.

Teofimo Lopez was knocked down and defeated for the first time in 2021

Following his unanimous decision victory over Lomachenko to unify the IBF and WBO World Lightweight titles, Lopez would return 13 months later.

Taking on George Kambosos Jr. in the Madison Square Garden Theatre, Lopez was a huge favorite going into the title showdown.

The Australian Kambosos Jr. went into the bout with Lopez as a 19-0 fighter. However, ‘Ferocious’ had not faced a fighter as high-profile as Lopez to that point.

The opening round of the bout in November 2021 would live up to Kambosos Jr.’s nickname as it was filled with ferocity.

Lopez went into the bout seemingly hoping to make it a quick night at the office, attempting to land powerful punches on the challenger. Despite landing dangerous punches in the round, Lopez potentially got over-confident, as a counter right hand put the champion down.

The two would go through the rounds having a close contest. However, as the later rounds began, it appeared as if the underdog challenger was ahead on the scorecards.

However, in the 10th round, Lopez began to pull his way back into the bout. A knockdown in the opening minute of the round would have Kambosos Jr. on wobbly legs. However, the Australian would survive the round.

With both men having plenty of success throughout the fight, the brawl ended in a split decision, in favor of Kambosos Jr.

The electric showdown was described as ‘fight of the year’, and ‘a classic fight,’ by fans.

Teofimo Lopez to share card with Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia

Lopez will return to action on May 2nd when he competes at an event set to take place in Times Square, New York.

Taking on Arnold Barboza Jr., Lopez (32-0) will put his WBO World Super Lightweight title on the line. As well as this, Lopez will be sharing the card with Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia.

Lopez has exchanged words with Haney and Garcia in the past, meaning the event in May will likely be a fiery one.

Haney (31-0-1) will take on Jose Ramirez (29-2), while Garcia (24-1-1) headlines the event versus Roland Romero (16-2).
