Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez knocked out Kal Yafai

On February 29, 2020, Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez challenged Kal Yafai for the WBA super flyweight title inside the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas, USA.

Going into the bout, following his devastating KO defeat to Rungvisai, the pound-for-pound icon had participated in just two comeback fights against low-level opposition.

With that in mind, his supporters were fearful when Yafai stormed out of his corner and started to find early success.

However, utilizing his formidable mind, Chocolatito was slowly but surely able to work his way inside, piling on the pressure and landing vicious body shots.

By the eighth round, the challenger had the Brit ready to go, landing a combination that sent the champion hurtling toward the canvas.

In a testament to his heart, Yafai rose to his feet. But Gonzalez wasn’t going to let the opportunity of reclaiming his former glory slip him by.

In the ninth, the all-time great detonated a monstrous right hand that dropped his rival to the floor.

Realizing Yafai was in no fit state to continue, the referee jumped in, consequently crowning Gonzalez world champion once again.

When will Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez fight next?

On July 12, 2024, Chocolatito destroyed Rober Barrera via tenth-round knockout in front of his adoring people at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello in Managua, Nicaragua.

In the aftermath, he confirmed plans to try and win a world title in a fifth weight class.

The Ring Magazine later claimed the future Hall of Famer was in talks to return to super flyweight to take on Phumelele Cafu for the WBO title.

Reports have since suggested that he’ll make one last walk to the ring in his homeland before retiring.

Regardless of whatever Gonzalez chooses to do, his legacy is already carved in stone.
