Rocky Marciano overcame being dropped to beat Archie Moore

On September 21, 1955, Rocky Marciano went to war with Archie Moore, inside the Yankee Stadium, New York, USA.

The pair delivered an iconic battle that has stood the test of time.

Showcasing his superior skill, Moore started well, landing crisp jabs on his opponent and even holding his own in the exchanges.

In the second round, the underdog detonated a huge counter right hand that sent the icon tumbling towards the canvas.

Refusing to give up, Marciano got back to his feet and began applying pressure, slowly but surely tiring his opponent out.

In the sixth round, the all-time great dropped his foe twice, firstly with a right hook and secondly with a lethal barrage of punches.

After surviving the following round, Moore was on the floor for a third time in the eighth, and somehow managed to get up.

However, in the ninth segment, Marciano landed two ferocious left hooks that closed the show.

After beating Moore, Marciano ran off into the sunset with a magnificent 49-0 record.

To this day, only Floyd Mayweather has eclipsed this achievement, walking away at 50-0.
