Oleksandr Usyk was given tough test by British heavyweight veteran to set up Anthony Joshua rivalry

Ukrainian superstar Oleksandr Usyk has captured the hearts of many despite disposing of many fan-favorite fighters.

From Usyk dismantling Tony Bellew to wins over Daniel Dubois, Tyson Fury, and Anthony Joshua, the two-weight world champion is yet to be bested.

Possessing an elite skillset, Usyk has been dominant as a professional, extending from his impressive amateur career.

However, as Usyk left the cruiserweight division, he faced a tough test from a veteran before becoming heavyweight champion.

Following Oleksandr Usyk’s first heavyweight outing against Chazz Witherspoon, he would be paired up with veteran title challenger Derek Chisora.

The two would meet in Wembley Arena, London, as Usyk searched for his 18th professional win. ‘Del Boy’ Chisora went into the bout with a 32-9 record as a former world title challenger.

Chisora was coming off the back of three successive wins and would boast an almost 40-pound weight advantage. However, it would not be enough for the English fighter.

Usyk would be able to win the bout over the course of 12 rounds, however, it was not easy for the Ukrainian. Looking to make the fight rough with his stalking pressure, Chisora had a gritty performance.

‘Del Boy’ would have success in the bout. Looking to disrupt Usyk’s elegant and footwork-focused style, the Ukrainian would be caught on occasion. However, it was not enough for the British fighter to emerge as the victor.

The judges would score the contest 115-113, 115-113, and 177-112 in favor of Usyk, who would compete for a world title in his next bout.

Oleksandr Usyk would best Anthony Joshua twice in 2021 and 2022

Usyk’s win over Chisora would set up a 2021 meeting with Anthony Joshua. As the holder of the WBA, IBF, and WBO World Heavyweight titles, Joshua was looking to defend his status as champion.

Fighting in London, Joshua would not be able to defeat Usyk, as he suffered the second professional loss of his career. Joshua said it was the most painful defeat of his career as he lost via unanimous decision.

The two would rematch the following year, facing off in Saudi Arabia in August 2022. However, the result would be the same.

This time winning via split decision, Usyk was able to fend off Joshua, who has not become a world champion since.
