Luis Ortiz knocked out world title challenger who produced one of the biggest heavyweight upsets of the modern era

Luis Ortiz produced a spectacular display against a heavyweight fighter famed for claiming the undefeated record of a boxer expected to become world champion.

When the heavy-handed southpaw burst onto the scene, he instantly started gaining the respect of purists.

The technically gifted operator had the skills to match anyone in the division and the power to render them brutally unconscious as well.

On a night he’ll never forget, ‘King Kong’ produced one of the best performances of his career against a fighter who fought Wladimir Klitschko for the WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine titles.

Luis Ortiz finished Tony Thompson with a savage left hand

On February 23, 2013, Tony Thompson flew across the Atlantic to take on David Price in Liverpool, UK.

At the time, the Brit was considered one of the most talented fighters in boxing.

Having claimed an Olympic bronze medal and showcased awe-inspiring power, many expected the Scouser to eventually conquer the sport.

However, Thompson completely dismantled him, winning via a stunning second-round stoppage, before securing a fifth-round KO in the rematch.

But while he successfully put an end to the Price hype train, he wasn’t able to do the same thing to Luis Ortiz.

The pair met on March 5, 2016, inside the D.C. Armory in Washington, DC, USA.

The fight got off to a dramatic start with the Cuban dropping his opponent inside the very first round with a left hand.

Showcasing fighting spirit in abundance, Thompson got up and unleashed impressive body shots that prompted the powerhouse to bang his gloves together.

But in the third round, Ortiz connected with another heavy blow that sent his foe crashing toward the canvas for a second time.

Once again, Thompson fought on, but in the sixth segment, another thunderous blow marked the third knockdown, resulting in the referee calling a halt to the action.

Luis Ortiz became ‘The Boogeyman’ of the heavyweight division by knocking out a former world title challenger

While Thompson was a fantastic victory for Ortiz to get on his resume, it wasn’t the biggest scalp of his career.

In his previous outing, the esteemed competitor went head-to-head with another fighter who’d challenged for the heavyweight throne.

Once again, the talented practitioner of the sweet science produced a spectacular showing.

In a display that caught the attention of fans, Ortiz destroyed a former world title challenger.
