Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s most devastating loss was eerily similar to his father’s worst night in boxing

Julio Cesar Chavez is set to fight for the second time in four years as he takes on Jake Paul at the end of the month.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is 39 years old and has had just one fight, a win over a 1-0 opponent, in the last four years.

Despite that, his 54-6-1 record makes him an attractive opponent for Jake Paul, who has retired 75% of his opponents, more due to their inability to continue in the sport than his ability.

Chavez Jr. has faced some credible names, though, including Canelo Alvarez, though with every step up, he’s been beaten, in one case, very badly.

Daniel Jacobs dominated Chavez Jr. with a KO that mirrored his father’s final fight

In Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.‘s final fight, the 107-5-2 Mexican legend faced 29-6-1 Grover Wiley.

Wiley put a beating on Chavez Sr., forcing him to retire in his corner after the fifth round. Chavez claimed he had broken his hand, though may have finally succumbed to age too, as he was in his early forties.

The fight took place at the America West Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, an arena that changed its name to the Talking Stick Resort Arena years later.

This was the same arena where Chavez Jr. was beaten by Daniel Jacobs. Jacobs beat Chavez so badly that he, too, retired in his corner, after the fifth round.

Chavez Sr.’s loss to Wiley came in 2005, and it was only two years later that Chavez Jr. faced Wiley to even the score.

Chavez Jr., 31-0-1 as a professional, sought to avenge his family’s honor by defeating Wiley, who was one of only three men to defeat Chavez Sr.

The others were Oscar De La Hoya and Kostya Tszyu. Roy Jones Jr. called Chavez Sr. out for a fight on the Paul vs Chavez undercard.

Chavez Jr. knocked Wiley out in the third round. Wiley did fight again, but never won, and retired in 2008.
