Julio Cesar Chavez fought 0-1 fighter in his 66th fight as closer look raises questions over legend’s record

Julio Cesar Chavez will forever be a legend and a sporting icon, but a close inspection of his record reveals some opponents had no business sharing the ring with him.

Julio Cesar Chavez retired with an extremely impressive record of 107-6-2, and was stopped just four times in his career.

Chavez lost to only five men, and avenged two of his losses to Frankie Randall and Willie Wise, who beat Chavez in an upset of the year fight.

Despite his legendary status, Chavez’s record boasts wins over numerous opponents who had nothing to offer in terms of competitiveness, and the question remains why were some of these men his opponents to begin with?

Julio Cesar Chavez fought 0-1 Ramon Aramburu in his 66th fight

In 1989, just three fights after claiming the WBC Super lightweight world title, Chavez faced an inexcusable opponent.

Just a matter of weeks after his previous fight, Chavez faced 0-1 Ramon Aramburu in his 66th fight, unsurprisingly winning by knockout.

Aramburu never fought again, and is recorded as having an 0-2 record.

Chavez’s strange match-ups don’t end there, though, as in his 41st fight, the Mexican legend faced a man who had not entered the ring even once, and had a record of 0-0. Strangely, this was just the third undefeated opponent of Chavez’s, with the first two being 0-0 and 2-0 in his first two fights.

In 1990, after winning a ‘Fight of the Year’ world title unification against Meldrick Taylor, Chavez, who lost to Grover Wiley, faced 5-3 Akwei Addo and 4-3-1 Russell Mosley in his 70th and 71st fights.

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. has called out Chavez Sr. for a fight on the undercard, though Chavez has yet to respond.

On the undercard, Gilberto Ramirez will defend his world title against Yuniel Dorticos.
