Julio Cesar Chavez claims he ‘would have definitely beaten’ undefeated world champion in his prime

Julio Cesar Chavez was one of the best fighters in the world in his prime, and he thinks he could beat an all-time great during that time.

The Mexican boxing legend amassed 107 wins in his incredible career, losing just 6 times in 25 years.

Julio Cesar Chavez won world titles at three weight divisions and holds numerous records for his title wins and title defenses.

As one of the greatest boxers of all time, he is sure he could beat one of the undefeated all-time greats if he were still in his prime.

Julio Cesar Chavez backs himself to beat Floyd Mayweather in his prime

A bout between Chavez and Floyd Mayweather would only go one way, according to the Mexican boxing legend.

In an interview with PremierLiveTV, Chavez was asked who would win in a fight between him and the undefeated former world champion, “Money” Mayweather.

“El Cesar del Boxeo” was confident in his ability, claiming he’d “definitely” beat Mayweather in his prime, as long as the fight was at 140 lbs.

Chavez said: “In our prime, I think it would have been a fight. Difficult, complicated. I believe that in 140 lbs, I would definitely have beaten him.

“I would have beaten him. Why? Because that was my weight. I could never dial 147lbs. I fought for the championship, but no, it was not my weight. At 140 lbs, I would have beaten Mayweather.

“Remember that I fought with his uncle? And his uncle was the one who taught [him to box], so it is that. I think I would have beaten him.”

Given that Mayweather won all 50 of his professional fights and titles in three weight classes, Chavez is very confident in his own ability if he thinks he’d have beaten ‘Money’.

Floyd Mayweather’s uncle lost to Julio Cesar Chavez in a huge title fight

Chavez thinks he could beat Mayweather, partly because he beat his uncle twice during his incredible career.

Their first bout was for the WBC Super Featherweight title, where Roger Mayweather challenged the Mexican boxer for the belt in Winchester, Nevada.

That 1985 fight ended in a TKO, with the referee stopping the bout in the second round after Chavez dominated his American opponent.

The rematch was four years later, where Inglewood, California, hosted the WBC Light Welterweight clash.

Mayweather was broken down by the intense pressure from Chavez, which ended in the champion retiring in the tenth round to hand Chavez the victory.
