Canelo Alvarez defeated Jaime Munguia in 2024 but there is one thing Munguia has that Canelo doesn’t.
Jaime Munguia has now moved trainers to train with Eddy Reynoso, longtime trainer of Munguia’s former nemesis Canelo.
The pair fought last year, and Canelo handed Munguia his first career defeat by unanimous decision.
Munguia’s record now sits at 44-2, though there is one man he was able to beat in better fashion than the Mexican pound-for-pound elite.

Jaime Munguia stopped Canelo’s former foe John Ryder for the first time in nine years
British boxing icon John Ryder has been in the ring with a host of great talents from Callum Smith to Daniel Jacobs.
His second defeat and first stoppage loss came in 2015 at the hands of Nick Blackwell, who suffered a brain injury against Chris Eubank Jr.
Ryder lost a handful of fights since, but was never stopped, even when he faced Canelo.
Ryder bravely fought Canelo in 2023 on the backend of his career, picking himself up off the canvas in round five to go the distance with Alvarez. Alvarez, who sparred Frank Sanchez (a heavyweight), has gone the distance with his last six opponents, but beat Ryder in a wide decision.
Ryder’s next fight was his last, as he faced the younger and fresher Munguia, who dropped Ryder in rounds two, four, and nine, before closing the show with a ninth-round stoppage victory. Ryder retired after the loss.
Just four months later Canelo and Munguia faced off, with Munguia also making it to the final bell, but losing a clear decision having also been knocked down in round four.
Canelo praised Munguia after the fight.
Jaime Munguia was knocked out by underdog with just four KO’s to his 26 wins in his last fight
Munguia’s last fight saw him face Bruno Surace, a heavy underdog who had just four stoppage wins out of 27 fights, with a record of 25-0-2 at the time of the fight.
Surace was dropped in the second round and seemed destined to lose the fight, but in the sixth round produced a shot nobody expected, least of all Munguia.
Munguia was unable to beat the count and Surace secured the fifth knockout of his career. Surace’s win over Munguia was the upset of the year.
The pair will rematch on the undercard of Canelo vs William Scull in May.
