“It’s not even close”… Fans snub Gervonta Davis in ‘face of boxing’ debate

Boxing holds a whole host of popular fighters, from Gervonta Davis to Canelo Alvarez and even Jake Paul, but the age-old question remains – Who is the face of boxing?

To be the face of boxing could mean many things – some think it’s the fighter who generates the most money, others think it’s the fighter who has the most fans. Some believe it’s the fighter with the best career, whilst others say it’s whoever makes the most headlines.

For some, it can only be someone in a glamour division, but for others it’s the fighter making waves despite their smaller size. There is much to say on the debate, and a recent social media post has certainly sparked the conversation.

Fans argue over who the face of boxing really is

In a post by Source of Boxing on X, the question was posed:

The graphic shows a few top contenders for the spot, including Canelo Alvarez, who for many is the most popular, Oleksandr Usyk, who some would say is the most talented, and Gervonta Davis, who could be considered the most exciting.

Whilst all have a case to be made, the comments seemed to overwhelmingly give one name:

““Face of boxing” is a popularity contest and Canelo is way more popular than any fighter as of now.”

“It’s still canelo. With tank second. Others here have skill but poor ability to sell a fight.”

“I don’t why y’all continue to ask this question when the answer hasn’t or will change until Canelo retires lol”

Others, however, disagree:

“They often say the heavyweight division carries the sport and if that is the case then it has to be Oleksandr Usyk..”

Inoue no doubt.”

Interestingly, Terence Crawford, who will spar Lester Martinez ahead of his fight with Canelo, and Dmitry Bivol, who beat Joe Smith Jr. on his road to success, were mentioned the least by far, and Gervonta Davis, perhaps owing to his recent draw with Lamont Roach, who claims Davis tried to bite him, was not as highly favored as many might have expected.

Gervonta Davis declared himself the face of boxing

Following one of Davis’ fights, ‘Tank’ was asked:

“You said ‘I’ve watched Floyd, I watch Canelo, I look at all the tapes of Ray Leonard, Manny Pacquiao, all these guys. I’m gonna be the face of boxing.’ Are you now?”

Davis replied: “I’m definitely the face of boxing. Abso-f——–lutely.”

Tank boasts one of the highest KO rates of any active fighter, but according to the fans ranks second below Canelo, who is set to fight for the accolade of two-time undisputed super middleweight champion next against William Scull in May.
