What David Goggins said to Andrew Moloney after the Joshua Franco rematch

On November 14, 2020, while the world was in lockdown during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Andrew Moloney was fighting for the WBA super flyweight title.

After losing his strap to Joshua Franco in their first encounter, he was determined to win the belt back in the rematch, exuding determination and a ferocious will to win from the moment he set foot in the ring in Las Vegas.

In the first two rounds, the Australian looked sensational, appearing to cause damage to his rival’s eye with a punch. However, it was controversially deemed a head clash, resulting in the bout ending in a no-contest.

Following the conclusion of the action, ‘The Monster’ was understandably emotional, but he was somewhat cheered up by David Goggins, who firmly believed he ought to have won the fight.

In an exclusive interview with Bloody Knockout, Moloney, remembered: “That was pretty cool. It was in the bubble at the MGM Grand, there was only 100 people there. David Goggins was there.

“That was where I first discovered him, and I was really attracted to his story and his mindset and listening to a lot of his videos and podcasts during the lead-up to the fight, so it was quite strange that he was there.

“That was actually the second Franco fight, where they still haven’t found the headbutt. I should’ve won that fight by stoppage, and the commission deemed that it was a head clash, which he knows and I know, there was no head clash, it was from a punch. I know the exact punch that does it; I can show anyone on the footage if you want to watch it.

“That was a heartbreaking night, and Goggins was there in the crowd. I had the opportunity to talk to him after the fight, and he said, ‘You deserved that fight’. He just showed his support.

“That was cool coming from a guy like him, but still a heartbreaking night. Probably the worst night in my professional career.”
