Gervonta Davis was 30-3 as an amateur, with two of those losses coming to one man who at one point was almost family to Davis’ rival, Shakur Stevenson.
For years, fans have waited with bated breath for a huge lightweight match-up between Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson. After Stevenson’s next fight against William Zepeda and Davis’ potential rematch with Lamont Roach Jr., we may finally see it happen.
Though we can’t say who will win, one thing we do know is that Davis has faced a man who once had a very strong connection to Stevenson and lost. Twice.

Gervonta Davis suffered two defeats to Shakur Stevenson’s girlfriend’s brother
In 2010, in the USA Junior National Championship Semi-Finals, Tank took his second amateur defeat to Joet Gonzalez via a points decision.
Two years later, Davis met Gonzalez again and lost via disqualification. Davis had only lost to Ernesto Delgadillo before, who evened the score after Davis beat him in their first encounter.
Gonzalez and Davis met for a third time in the 2012 Golden Gloves quarter-final, in which Davis finally got his own back on Gonzalez and won on points.
Joet Gonzalez is the only man to have multiple wins over Davis, and was also close to being Shakur Stevenson’s brother-in-law, when Stevenson began dating his sister.
Stevenson dated Jajaira Gonzalez, an amateur boxer, but was never welcomed by her brother Joet, or the rest of her family.
Years before his rivalry with Davis, whose KO streak was broken by Isaac Cruz, Shakur even fought Joet for the vacant featherweight title in 2019, a fight he won in a near shut-out unanimous decision.
Gervonta Davis’ last opponent was beaten by Shakur Stevenson’s former foe
In his last fight, Davis, who has a 90% KO rate, fought to a draw with Lamont Roach Jr., who was 25-1-1 at the time, having beaten Davis’ former opponent Hector Luis Garcia two fights earlier.
Roach’s one loss came at the hands of Jamel Herring, who beat Roach in a wide unanimous decision in 2019.
Two years later, Herring was beaten by Shakur by TKO in the tenth round after winning just one round on one judge’s scorecard.
