Gervonta Davis bested amateur rival who went on to drop a gigantic champion

Gervonta Davis is seeking a rematch with Lamont Roach after their last fight ended in a controversial draw.

Gervonta Davis‘ record received its first blemish as he fought to a draw with Lamont Roach Jr.

Davis and Roach had much history going into the fight, as Davis had beaten Roach on two occasions as an amateur. Also in the amateurs, Davis faced Joet Gonzalez, Shakur Stevenson‘s former girlfriend’s brother, whom he fought for a world title.

There is one other notable name on Davis’ amateur record, that of a man who dropped boxing’s tallest world champion.

Gervonta Davis defeated Erickson Lubin as an amateur

In 2009, Davis fought Erickson Lubin in San Antonio. He won on points, four years before Lubin’s pro debut.

Lubin’s pro career reached a peak when he faced Jermell Charlo in 2017 for the WBC super-welterweight title. Lubin’s first title attempt went terribly, as Charlo knocked him out in just one round.

Fortunately for Lubin, a win over Terrell Gausha in 2020 and Jeison Rosario in 2021 set him up for a second title challenge against Sebastian Fundora.

Lubin and Fundora fought for nine rounds, and after eight the scores read 85-85, 85-84, 85-84 Lubin.

He fell short once more, though, as he failed to come out for the tenth round.

Gervonta Davis lost to just two men as an amateur

According to BoxRec, Davis built up an amateur record of 30-3, losing twice to Gonzalez, once via disqualification.

The only other man Davis, who KO’d Yuriorkis Gamboa, lost to was Ernesto Delgadillo, who he beat in their first encounter but lost to in their second.

Delgadillo went 11-1-2 as a pro, but faced nobody of note and hasn’t fought since 2020.
