Gennadiy Golovkin lost in the amateurs to a boxer who was beaten in a controversial world title fight against an icon

Gennadiy Golovkin suffered a tough loss to a man who’d eventually challenge for a world title.

In his sparkling career, ‘Triple G’ has looked nothing short of monstrous, sending shivers down the spines of every opponent who dares set foot inside the ring with him.

However, on occasion, some of his opponents have given him a run for his money. Kell Brook caught Golovkin’s attention with a huge uppercut.

And during a tough amateur contest, the Kazakh fell short against ‘The Matrix’.

Gennadiy Golovkin lost to Andre Dirrell before the American was beaten by Carl Froch

Back in 2004, Gennadiy Golovkin was defeated by Andre Dirrell in Mississippi, USA.

The loss set a fire underneath the warrior, who quickly bounced back, claiming his revenge against the American at the 2004 Olympics.

Sadly, the pair never settled their feud once and for all, with their careers heading in different directions as professionals.

While Golovkin won the WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight world titles, Dirrell never scaled the mountain, not officially anyway.

On October 17, 2009, the slick boxer challenged Carl Froch for the WBC super middleweight world title in the Super Six World Boxing Classic, in Nottingham, UK.

Throughout the contest, Dirrell showcased his superior movement and counterpunching ability, leading many to believe he’d done enough to win the contest.

However, after twelve hard-fought rounds, Froch was awarded the victory via split decision.

Was Gennadiy Golovkin really undefeated before his losses to Canelo Alvarez?

While Golovkin lost very rarely in the amateurs, he was borderline flawless as a professional, until his first official and highly contested defeat against Canelo Alvarez.

However, should he have actually been unbeaten going into his trilogy with the Mexican?

While he received the win, there’s one fighter fans think beat Golovkin.
