Floyd Mayweather’s former opponent explains bizarre corner advice he received which led to controversial KO

Former world champion Floyd Mayweather has had some incredibly memorable moments inside of the ring.

From his epic money fight with Conor McGregor, to Mayweather having an impressive knockout victory in his debut, ‘Money’ has made huge headlines in the sport.

Retiring with a perfect 50-0 record, there may not be another champion who seemed quite as untouchable as Mayweather was. Able to get the better of some of the greatest boxers of all time, there was no denying the legend’s ability.

However, in one bout, Mayweather earned a knockout victory under unlikely circumstances.

Floyd Mayweather had a controversial knockout over Victor Ortiz

As Mayweather was coming off of a win over Shane Mosely, he then looked to take on WBC World Welterweight champion Victor Ortiz.

Fighting in September 2011, Mayweather was looking for his 42nd professional win. As for Ortiz, the champion had a 29-2-2 record.

The fourth round of their championship fight would see one of the most bizarre series of events in a boxing ring. As Ortiz and Mayweather were close to one another, the champion seemingly attempted to headbutt Mayweather, resulting in the fight being halted.

The referee deducted a point from Ortiz, who was deemed to have intentionally headbutted Mayweather. As the welterweights were about to return to action, Ortiz offered an apology to Mayweather.

Although Mayweather acknowledged the apology, and the referee resumed the action, Ortiz was seemingly not ready when ‘Money’ threw a punch. Stunning Ortiz, Mayweather would land a second punch, putting his opponent down and out.

The bout would end after the bizarre events that would see Ortiz lose his championship title. However, he did give an explanation as to why he jolted at his opponent.

Victor Ortiz explains why he headbutted Floyd Mayweather

Speaking to Vlad TV, Ortiz offered his insight as to what happened in his fight with Mayweather.

Ortiz said that he was struggling with his vision in the fight. Claiming that Mayweather’s elbow had struck him in the eye, the then-champion said, “I thought I lost my vision.”

Talking to his corner about the injury, Ortiz said that his corner told him going into round four to “Headbutt him. If worst comes to worst.”

As he had Mayweather against the ropes in round four, that’s when Ortiz lunged with his head to his opponent. However, Ortiz said on the incident, “I felt completely disgusted in myself… I shouldn’t have done that.”
