Errol Spence went to a world champion’s hometown and fractured his eye socket in dominant win

Errol Spence remains on the pound-for-pound lists of many despite his loss to Terence Crawford.

Errol Spence’s record sits at 28-1 after his loss to Crawford in his latest outing back in 2023.

Despite his loss, Spence has had an illustrious career with wins over Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, and Yordenis Ugas. Spence fought Ugas after the Manny Pacquiao fight fell through.

One of his most impressive wins happened eight years ago, as Spence travelled to Sheffield, England to take on a world champion on his home turf.

Errol Spence broke British hearts as he dethroned a ‘Special’ champion

In 2017 Spence faced Kell Brook, also known as ‘Special K’. Brook was making his fourth defense of his IBF welterweight title, after an unsuccessful attempt at Gennadiy Golovkin‘s middleweight crowns in his previous fight.

Spence was coming off a string of stoppage wins, including wins over Chris Algieri and Chris Van Heerden, who Conor Benn retired later on.

Despite Spence incurring all the disadvantages – fighting away from home and fighting as the challenger, he put on a show, boxing Brook up til the penultimate round of their contest.

By round 11 it was close but clear Spence was ahead, with scorecards of 97-92, 96-93, 95-94, all in favor of Spence.

But he need not worry about scorecards and removed all doubt when he stopped Brook later that round after the Brit took a knee due to damage to his eye.

Eddie Hearn revealed, according to BoxRec, that Brook, who was almost beaten by Carson Jones, suffered a fractured eye socket in the fight, which was a stroke of bad luck, as he had fractured his other eye socket in his previous fight with Golovkin.

Kell Brook shared the ring with both Terence Crawford and Errol Spence, and revealed why Crawford was destined to win

Back in 2023, Boxing Social spoke to Brook on the upcoming fight with Spence and Crawford, asking his opinion on who might win as he had fought both.

Brook lost via fourth-round stoppage to Crawford in his penultimate fight, initially retiring after but returning to face Amir Khan.

Brook revealed that Spence was the stronger puncher: “I think that Spence has probably got the stronger dig, stronger puncher in there. But Crawford is very surprising, he catches you by surprise and they’re the shots that can knock you out. He’s got some pop as well.”

Though he admitted Spence had one major disadvantage, owing to a tragic incident outside the ring:

“I’d have to lean towards Crawford, he’s been more active than Spence, who has been in a big car crash.”

Spence was involved in two major car accidents throughout his career, which many believe had a major effect on his boxing.
