Dmitry Bivol was able to overcome the odds to defeat Canelo Alvarez in May of 2022.
After defeating Caleb Plant to become the undisputed world super middleweight champion, Alvarez set his sights on becoming a four-division champion.
However, the Russian, Bivol, would become just the second fighter to get the better of Alvarez.
The loss would be Alvarez’s first in almost 10 years, as Bivol extended his unbeaten record to 20-0.
The result was certainly a shock to boxing fans, however, one statistic from the bout shows how Alvarez was bested.

Dmitry Bivol had incredible punching statistics versus Canelo Alvarez
As Alvarez was moving up in weight, the size difference between the pair was a clear issue for one of the greatest middleweights of all time.
Although both men weighed in just 0.2 pounds apart, and Bivol’s reach was only 1.5 inches greater, the Russian would stand almost four inches taller than Alvarez, as well as being naturally larger.
Using this to his advantage, Bivol kept the fight at the range that suited him, with his jab causing problems for the super middleweight champion.
Not only did Bivol control the distance, but he also outworked Alvarez, as the statistics show.
Statistics by CompuBox show the output from both men in the fight, which indicated Bivol was the more active fighter.
In terms of total punches thrown and landed, Bivol threw an average of 59 punches every round, landing 13, or 22%. As for Alvarez, he threw an average of 41 punches, landing 7, or 17%.
So not only did Bivol throw more punches, but he also landed at a better rate as well.
Bivol landed his power punches at a much higher rate as well. In 10 out of the 12 rounds, Bivol landed a higher percentage of power punches on Alvarez than he received.
The Russian was also able to land at least 10 punches in all but one round of the fight. As for Alvarez, he only reached this number in two rounds.
Dmitry Bivol speaks on potential Canelo Alvarez rematch
Speaking ahead of his rematch with Artur Beterbiev where a special belt will be on the line, Bivol was asked by Seconds Out about his thoughts on another bout with Alvarez.
When asked if a sequel with Alvarez is something that he might like, Bivol responded by saying, “I don’t think too much about this rematch. I have other thoughts in my head.”
“If we have an offer after this fight, we will think about this offer. If not, we will think about something else,” said Bivol.
Bivol would also say that he is fully focused on his rematch with Beterbiev, who became the first man to defeat him. “God gave me the challenge [of Beterbiev].”
