Canelo has only been bested by two men in his 66 fights – Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol.
Canelo domiated Austin Trout to set up his match with Floyd Mayweather in 2013, at the age of 23.
The 36-year-old, more experienced Mayweather took Canelo the distance, but won a majority decision and snatched Canelo‘s WBC super-welterweight title.
Now 42-1-1, Canelo sought to return from the loss with a vengeance, and that’s exactly what he did.
Canelo dominated Alfredo Angulo in comeback following maiden defeat to Floyd Mayweather
Looking to get back to winning ways six months after falling short against a legend, Canelo faced 22-3 Alfredo Angulo in Las Vegas.
Angulo had lost only to James Kirkland, Kermit Cintron, and Erislandy Lara. Canelo had beaten Cintron in 2011, and went on to defeat both Lara and Kirkland back to back following the Angulo fight.
The fight with Angulo made it to the championship rounds, where, in round 10, Canelo’s punishing barrages and relentless pressure eventually proved too much for Angulo, who had no answer for the Mexican’s onslaught.
The referee jumped in after a flurry from the face of boxing – Canelo had showed him all he needed to see.
Canelo will enter a pound-for-pound mega-fight if he wins tonight
Canelo is facing William Scull tonight for the undisputed super-middleweight crown. A win would make Canelo a two-time undisputed champ in the division, and will allow plans to go forward for a mega-fight in Saudi Arabia in September.
If he beats Scull, Canelo vs Terence Crawford will be officially on, and Crawford has been moving up in weight since his win over Israil Madrimov to prepare for the bout.
Beyond that, Canelo could face Chris Eubank Jr. in London after his win over Conor Benn.
