Canelo Alvarez sets unwanted piece of boxing history during drab win over William Scull

Canelo defeated William Scull by unanimous decision to become a two-time undisputed super-middleweight world champion, though many were unimpressed by both men’s performances.

Canelo had his 67th fight last night and moved to 63-2-2. His sole losses have come against Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol, and his draws against Gennady Golovkin, whom he later beat twice, and a journeyman early in his career.

A fight between Canelo and Terence Crawford has now been announced for September in Las Vegas, though fans just hope that fight is more interesting than last night’s, where Canelo and Scull broke a record, but for all the wrong reasons.

Canelo vs William Scull set the record for fewest punches in a 12-round fight

Though he got the win, Canelo is clearly beginning to slow down, as he has not scored a knockout since 2021, seven fights ago.

Last night, his performance reflected this, as Canelo, who beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (Jake Paul‘s next opponent), and his foe threw just 445 combined punches – just 37 punches a round, combined.

This is the fewest punches recorded in a 12-round fight in CompuBox history, and according to the stats, Canelo, who has a lucrative Riyadh Season contract, landed 56 punches in the entire fight to Scull’s 55.

Edwin Des Los Santos landed just 40 punches in his fight with Shakur Stevenson, which was the lowest ever at the time, until Regis Prograis’ fight with Devin Haney saw that record broken once more, as Prograis landed only 36 punches in the entire fight.

Devin Haney vs Jose Ramirez almost broke another terrible record in snooze-fest fight

Fans were thrilled when The Ring announced a weekend with three major boxing cards, though, following Canelo’s outing, none so far have truly delivered.

Canelo made history for fewest punches ever in his fight with Scull, whilst Ryan Garcia looked poor against Rolly Romero, Martin Bakole looked out of shape against Efe Ajagba, who KO’d Deontay Wilder’s next opponent, and Arnold Barboza failed to impress against Teofimo Lopez.

Though these were all disappointing for many, none came close, aside from Canelo and Scull, to breaking an undesirable record.

Devin Haney vs Jose Ramirez, though, was just four punches shy of breaking the record for fewest punches landed by a fighter, as Ramirez landed just 40 on Haney in the entire fight.
