Canelo Alvarez lost to Dmitry Bivol in 2022 via unanimous decision

After Alvarez stopped Caleb Plant in a super middleweight unification bout, he set his sights on the light heavyweight division.

On May 7th, 2022, Alvarez would move up to light heavyweight to challenge WBA champion Dmitry Bivol. The pair would meet in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Bivol held a perfect 19-0 record and was looking to make the ninth defense of his title against Alvarez.

The two 31-year-olds would have a relatively close affair through 12 rounds. However, there were few complaints when the judges’ scorecards were read.

As Bivol outlanded Alvarez in terms of punching statistics, he was declared the winner. The three judges all scored the bout the exact same way, 115-113 in favor of the Russian.

The loss was just Alvarez’s second as his record fell to 57-2-2.

As for the Russian, Bivol would become an undisputed champion in 2025, following in Alvarez’s footsteps.

Canelo Alvarez bounced back from Dmitry Bivol loss with Gennadiy Golovkin trilogy

Returning to the super middleweight division, Alvarez would put his undisputed status on the line against old foe Gennadiy Golovkin.

The fighter from Kazakhstan had not been successful in two attempts against Alvarez. Their first meeting was a draw, while Alvarez narrowly won their second encounter.

In what could be considered the most decisive fight between the pair, Alvarez emerged as the winner. Bouncing back against his loss over Bivol, Alvarez handed Golovkin his second-ever defeat in his final career outing.
