Callum Smith clobbered his fellow countryman to win first world title

‘Mundo’ has been a fan-favorite fighter in England in recent years thanks to his electric performances.

Callum Smith had an incredible war with Joshua Buatsi in his last bout, in what was the 31st win of his career.

Capturing the WBO Interim World Light Heavyweight title, Smith has several top potential opponents as viable options for his next outing.

Smith has only been bested in his career by Canelo Alvarez and Artur Beterbiev, showing how impressive his skillset is. However, his first world title bout showed boxing fans who Smith is.

Callum Smith defeated George Groves for world title

George Groves is a former world champion from England, who hung up his gloves with a professional record of 28-4. In his final bout, he would take on Smith in Saudi Arabia.

Fighting in September 2018, Groves was looking to defend his WBA World Super Middleweight title for the third time against Smith. In his previous outing, Groves was able to get the better of Chris Eubank Jr.

However, it was not to be for the then-30-year-old.

In what was a closely contested fight, a 28-year-old Smith would emerge as the winner, claiming a world title for the first time.

The seventh round would see a fantastic check hook from Smith catch the champion, causing him to retreat. As Groves was clearly dazed, Smith would pile the pressure on his opponent, leading to ‘Saint George’ crumbling to the canvas.

Unable to beat the count, Smith was declared the winner, claiming the WBA title.

Callum Smith defended his title twice before facing Canelo Alvarez

Smith would return to the ring as a champion in June of 2019, nine months after claiming the world title. Facing Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (37-3), Smith scored knockdowns in the opening three rounds, before the fight was stopped.

‘Mundo’ would defend the title for a second time in Liverpool, in November 2019. Taking on fellow Englishman John Ryder (28-4), Smith would have a convincing unanimous decision win.

Attempting to defend his title for a third time, Smith faced one of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time, Alvarez. However, it would be Alvarez who won the bout, with a one-sided unanimous decision victory.

The win would see Smith drop his WBA World Super Middleweight title, as well as Alvarez claim the vacant WBC belt.
