Caleb Plant dominated title challenger in order to set up Canelo Alvarez meeting

Former super middleweight world champion Caleb Plant will look to work his way back into title contention when he returns on May 31st, 2025.

Set to take on Jose Resendiz, Plant will aim to defend his interim WBA World Super Middleweight title, which he won thanks to a stoppage over Trevor McCumby.

The win made Plant’s professional record 23-2, with his only two losses coming to current world champions David Benavidez and Canelo Alvarez.

It was Alvarez who handed Plant the first loss of his professional career. However, in order to set up the bout, Plant had an impressive performance to defend his world title.

Caleb Plant dominated Caleb Truax in California in 2021

After defeating Jose Uzcategui in January 2019, Plant became the IBF World Super Middleweight title holder.

Plant would defend his belt against Mike Lee and Vincent Feigenbutz before being paired up with Caleb Truax. Going into the bout with a 31-4-2 record, Truax was a previous holder of the IBF title.

The super middleweights would meet in Los Angeles in January 2021, as Plant successfully made the third defense of his world title.

Despite Truax previously being a world champion, he was not able to put up much of a challenge to a 28-year-old Plant. Winning every single round on the judges’ scorecards, ‘Sweethands’ would improve his professional record to 21-0.

As Alvarez defeated Avni Yildirim and Billy Joe Saunders in the following months of 2021, the two super middleweight champions were paired together for a unification bout.

Canelo Alvarez defeated Caleb Plant to become undisputed world champion

After Alvarez defeated Saunders for the WBO World Super Middleweight title, both he and Plant were the only champions of the division.

Meeting in November 2021, there would only be one champion left standing after the two left the ring in Las Vegas.

Although Plant boasted some success in the fight, he would fall to his first-ever defeat. An 11th round stoppage would see him drop his IBF crown, as Alvarez became an undisputed champion of the division.

Plant stopped Anthony Dirrell to bounce back from the loss, but has not yet been able to recapture a world title.
