Boxer who won upset over Anthony Joshua once punched his own trainer in the face

Anthony Joshua has been in the ring with some ferocious boxers, but only one of them has punched their own trainer in the face.

Anthony Joshua boasts a record of 28-4, with his only losses coming at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk, Andy Ruiz Jr., and, most recently, Daniel Dubois.

Joshua, who shares six common opponents with Tyson Fury, holds wins over Alexander Povetkin, Francis Ngannou, Kubrat Pulev, and more, and was even able to avenge the Ruiz Jr. loss, which marked the first of his career, to become a two-time world heavyweight champion.

Andy Ruiz Jr. almost knocks out coach in training

A viral clip of Andy Ruiz Jr. did the rounds, showing the Mexican land a flush left hook on the chin of his trainer by accident whilst doing padwork.

Fans commended the chin of Ruiz’s coach, with some even joking that it was better than Joshua’s, as Ruiz stopped Joshua in their first encounter.

Another didn’t like these comparisons, though, and said: “You’ve just made yourself look a bit silly… Ruiz hit this bloke’s chin, Ruiz hit AJ in the side of the head. Completely different.”

Tyson Fury one-upped Ruiz’s punch years prior, but instead of punching his coach, ‘The Gypsy King’ punched himself in the face.

Andy Ruiz fought to a draw in his last fight despite a broken hand

Following his loss in the rematch with Joshua, Ruiz’s career has been plagued by inactivity, with the Mexican only having three fights since 2019.

In 2021 he won a unanimous decision against Chris Arreola, followed by another unanimous decision over Luis Ortiz, who was recently in talks to face Lawrence Okolie, in 2022, but did not fight in 2023.

2024 saw his return against Jarrell Miller, a former opponent of Daniel Dubois, with the pair fighting to a majority decision draw. The one judge who did not have it as a draw scored the fight for Miller, as did many fans at the time.

Ruiz did reveal, however, why his performance was not up to par, showing a severe hand injury following his exit from the ring.
