Benavidez was stopped by Terence Crawford in hard-fought world title challenge

Terence Crawford is set to challenge Canelo Alvarez later this year in a mega-fight between pound-for-pound elites.

Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford remains undefeated with a record of 41-0 and is a four-weight world champion gearing up to put his perfect record and pound-for-pound status on the line against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Canelo is first set to face William Scull in May to become a two-time undisputed super-middleweight champion.

Many had hoped Canelo would face David Benavidez, but this seems unlikely, though it is actually Crawford who has faced a Benavidez first.

Terence Crawford stopped David Benavidez’s brother in world title contest

In 2018, Crawford, who famously dislikes Gervonta Davis, took on Jose Benavidez Jr., the brother of David Benavidez, and son of Jose Benavidez, who opened a fight mansion recently.

The fight was a defense of Crawford’s WBO welterweight title, and both men were undefeated at the time, with Crawford at 33-0 and Benavidez at 27-0.

The fight did make it to the final round, but not to the judges’ scorecards as Crawford stopped Benavidez with seconds to go in the round.

Even if the fight had gone the distance, Crawford, who broke down how he’d beat Shaquille O’Neal, was well up on the scorecards.

The British boxer who has shared the ring with both Canelo and Terence Crawford

In 2016, British boxer Amir Khan dared to be great by moving up to challenge Canelo for his WBC middleweight title.

The fight was closely contested until the sixth round, where Canelo landed a vicious overhand right, leaving Khan, who was in talks for an exhibition with Manny Pacquiao, laid out on the canvas.

Three years later, Khan earned his way back to world title contention when he challenged Crawford for his WBO welterweight title.

Khan once again made it to the sixth round, though was stopped by the Omaha man.

The fight gives little indication as to who would win out of Canelo and Crawford, as both men stopped Khan in the same round, though it is clear a fight between the pair will be must-watch for boxing fans.
