Jake Paul teases new date for Mike Tyson fight after medical issue causes postponement of July event

Jake Paul has teased the new date for his fight with Mike Tyson after their bout was postponed due to a medical issue.

The YouTube star was set to face legendary former heavyweight champion Tyson at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas on July 20 in a monumental night of boxing. But when the fighting icon, who turns 58 this month, suffered a medical issue on a plane with an ulcer flare up, doctors recommended that he take a break from training.

Tyson had tweeted that he was “now feeling 100 per cent” during the week, but a press release today confirmed that doctors warned him against training for the next few weeks. Instead, they will fight at a date later this year.

Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight postponed after medical emergency

During the week, Mike Tyson was reported by In Touch Weekly to have been dealt with by paramedics on board a flight from Miami to Los Angeles. He later claimed to be okay after it was confirmed that he had suffered an ulcer flare up.

But a press release today confirmed that the fight would be moved to a later date upon medical advice, with broadcaster Netflix set to announce a new date next week.

“During a follow up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations,” the statement read.

“Both Mike and Jake are in agreement that it is only fair to ensure that both athletes have equal training time to prepare for this important match and are able to compete at the highest level.

“The health and well-being of athletes is our top priority, and we fully support Mike in taking the necessary time to allow him to perform at the level he expects of himself.

“Mike is expected to return to his full training schedule in the coming weeks and is eager to get back in the ring. MVP anticipates rescheduling the match to later this year at AT&T Stadium, and we look forward to an exciting and well-prepared contest between these two exceptional athletes.”

The statement also confirmed that a new date for the highly-anticipated fight will be announced by the end of next week. They set a deadline of next Friday, June 7.

Jake Paul teases new date for Mike Tyson fight after postponement

After leaving a pre-prepared statement in his press release, Jake Paul took to Instagram to share a video giving his thoughts on the postponement. He leaked that the fight is likely to take place within “Q4”, meaning any time from October to the end of December.

“Obviously, devastating news,” Paul told fans in a selfie video. “I’m heartbroken, speechless, gutted. We’ve been working so hard over here, everyone in this camp and I just feel bad for everyone involved in this event.

“The whole undercard, an opportunity has been ripped from all of us but I do value Mike’s health first and foremost. I love that guy, I have so much respect for him and I want Mike to be healthy and he says he still is going to knock me out and I bought myself some time.

“So Mike is still talking s*** over there. Mike, if you still want to do this like you said behind closed doors you want to do this in Q4, you just need a little bit of time. So I’m ready whenever you are, this is too big of an opportunity.

“I think this fight is going to change the world, and I turn all my Ls into Ws. That’s a motto I live by and the universe makes no mistakes so let’s see what’s in store. But sorry this didn’t work out, to everyone, the fans, I love you guys.”

Mike Tyson opens up about postponing Jake Paul comeback fight

The massive Netflix event was due to be Tyson’s first bout since an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr in 2020. Both he and Paul had even gotten themselves sanctioned for a professional bout, which would mark the boxer’s return to the pro ranks for the first time since 2005.

“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time,” he said in a statement. “Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flareup, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover.

“My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good.

“I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”
