Canelo Alvarez will reunite with former long-time promoter Oscar De La Hoya next week in Las Vegas when he faces Jaime Munguia on Cinco De Mayo weekend.
Alvarez spent the majority of his professional career under the Golden Boy banner, before a legal battle in 2020 saw him get out of his contract and move on to work with other promoters. And despite now being a bonafide PBC roster member, he will have to work with De La Hoya in order to face Munguia.
His fellow Mexican has also been a Golden Boy fighter for years, but the meticulous match-making of his promoters has meant that he hasn’t reached the same level of stardom. But the pair are both set to make major money on May 4 when they meet at the T-Mobile Arena.
Jaime Munguia fight is first Golden Boy show for Canelo Alvarez since 2019
Canelo Alvarez became one of the sport’s biggest stars and won multiple world titles while working with De La Hoya. But he had an acrimonious split with his promoter following his light-heavyweight world title win over Sergey Kovalev in November of 2019.
The following year saw the onset of the coronavirus, and before the two parties could come to terms on another fight in the new era of the sport Alvarez was released from his contract in November 2020. He immediately fought under Matchroom and Eddie Hearn, but remained open to other offers after the fact.
He has since jumped between Hearn and PBC, before last year committing to at least three fights under the American outfit. However, in order to get a fight with top contender Munguia, he had to agree to a co-promotion which sees him reunite with De La Hoya.
Canelo Alvarez warned he has ‘all the cards stacked against him’ in Jaime Munguia fight
While many would favour Alvarez due to his experience and relative CV, De La Hoya reckons that his man will be able to defy the odds and crown himself as boxing’s new superstar. Speaking at an open workout ahead of the bout yesterday, he explained: “I think Jaime Munguia is going to do something special.
“He has the youth, the punch output and the chin. I see all the cards stacked against Canelo… Canelo is going to come out guns blazing, but there’s a changing of the guard in every era and I think that this is the perfect scenario for Jaime Munguia to take over.
“Jaime is ready to go. He’s faced every adversary and every style. Whether they brawl or box, he’s taken them out. Now he’s ready for the biggest fish in the sea.”
Oscar De La Hoya slams Canelo Alvarez for being ‘ungrateful’ as pair reunite for co-promotion
The relationship between De La Hoya and Alvarez is still frosty, as evidenced by the promoter’s take on his former charge. During a recent media workout for Munguia, the ex-world champion and Olympic gold medalist took aim at Alvarez for their fallout.
Asked if he found it “cool” to watch a star that he built compete at the top level, he replied: “It is cool, but he’s an ungrateful son of a gun. I build him for 11 years and then he finds an excuse to call me out on some crap, whatever.
“If it’s my personal life or outside of the ring, when I’m down he puts his foot on my neck and I don’t appreciate that. But he is doing what he’s doing. Obviously I’m not rooting for him, I’m rooting for my guy 1,000 percent.
